When designing a school playground or children's play area safety is paramount. This is of course true for the outdoor play equipment you choose, but also for the playground surfacing you use.
There are many different types of safety surfacing available, so you need to be sure you have all the information to make an informed choice. Each safer surfacing has pros and cons, view our Safer Surfacing Guide for more information and a detailed look at all the playground surfacing availablea and what you should be looking for when choosing a outdoor play surface.
Here is a snapshot guide....
When surfacing your outdoor play area safety is of upmost importance. Be sure to check the surfacing you choose meets the current standards BS EN:1177. All Playgrounds UK surfaces comply with BSEN: 1177 as standard.
Cost is important in most cases. You should consider not only the initial cost but also the on going maintenance cost. You want a outdoor surface that requires little maintenance and that is durable.
Most safer surfaces will require some degree of ground preparation. For some this will simply mean cutting into existing hard ground, for others ground excavation will be needed. This depends on the existing ground, and the type of surfacing. Ground preparation will effect the cost of the playground surfacing you choose so should be considered.
If the environment is high on your list, you may want to choose a surface that is environmentally friendly. Our Tiger Mulch® rubber surfacing is made from recycled tyres so ticks all the boxes. Our Playfall® rubber surface is made from partly recycled rubber. Or you could choose a natural product such as sand or woodchip.
